OK, let me be honest. I don’t remember it either. Actually I really didn’t even know that Richard Pryor has a show on NBC until about 6 years ago. But apparently in 1977, before my parents even got married and long before I was even thought of, the network F’d up and gave arguably the most controversial and most talented comedian of the time his own show.
From the daring opening monologue (above) to such racially charged skits like, “The Real Titanic” and off the wall musical performances (And the Pips is STILL hilarious!) – the show lasted all of 4 episodes. But four brilliant episodes they were.
Definitely pick up the DVD collection of the entire season. It’s easy to see where Dave Chapelle modeled his classic show after.
