Call it the Obama effect.
Perhaps sensing that African-American’s are a little more than best friends and donkey’s (don’t be mad Eddie, get your money), Disney is getting ready to release The Princess And The Frog – the tale of Princess Tiana set in a New Orleans jazz era.
Tiana, who is voiced by ANIKA NONI ROSE (Dreamgirls), makes history as the first Black princess. Though Disney has created tales around many different ethnicities (including Princess Jasmine, Mulan and Pochontas) this new film also marks the first American Princess.
Rose, who is best known for her Broadway roles, is honored but practical about her place in Disney history.
“I’m not like, skipping down the street with it, but when you take a moment and you think about the fact that this is what America has chosen to put out as Princess-hood, Princess-dom, it’s amazing.”
The film also boasts another historic African-american figure. Oprah Winfrey voices Princess Tiana’s mother.
The Princess And The Frog hits theaters Christmas day.
