So what that it’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year, you think that’s going to solve cash-flow problems?

Despite the unprecedented preview weekend, the TYLER PERRY and OPRAH WINFREY backed Precious isn’t a safe enough bet for Lionsgate to just release the film wide. Instead execs are determined to ’stay the course’ and continue with it’s plan to roll out the film one major market at a time.

Right now the film is playing in only theaters worldwide – in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta – all of which sold out every showing this past weekend, making history (again) and earning the film $1.9 million, the maximum it could’ve made. DC, San Fransisco and Chicago are three of the five cities who will see the film open this weekend. But even though according to studio execs themselves, ‘$5.5 million investment will prove to be profitable’, they don’t seem to believe enough in the little film that could, to simply release it wide.

In fact, Precious won’t be available to most of the country until Thanksgiving week.
