WYCLEF JEAN hits us off with a little freestyle. And every single time I see his face I think one thing. Where is LAURYN HILL? Clef goes into how he will never be broke because the checks from the publishing of both Pras and Lauryn are still accumulating and accruing interest (not sure if that’s all well and good) but I over looked that little pang it gave me in the pit of my stomach. Why? Because he said one thing. “If Lauryn Hill is listening, get the group back together.” Don’t you remember how dope THE FUGEES were? How Lauryn changed American view of what beauty was? I mean really–she stretched the very definition of what society saw as beauty from an African American woman.  All of a sudden it was beautiful in America’s eye to be almond eyed, cocoa skinned and “good hair” wasn’t a requisite. Kinky hair and full lips splashed on every magazine cover from Rolling Stone to Time Magazine. Don’t you remember?

For the sake of Hip Hop and on some deeper levels –our daughters– I hope there is a resurfacing of Lauryn Hill. I hope The Fugees find their way to reconciliation and a road to redemption. If home is where is heart is, Lauryn, we know you gave yours every single time you rapped/sang a verse. And we know you left a part of it when you went away. Come back, home.
